Why Should I Care?
Both the company and the market have a number of attractive features. The company is the technology leader in the field, having developed the initial concept and then nearly all of the subsequent commercial refinements. Flow has the broadest and deepest product line and the most advanced integration with articulation robotics and 3D modeling software. And although all of the manufacturers took a hit to the top line during the recession, Flow has the largest installed base, the largest number of service contracts, and the largest recovery potential; it is currently trading at less than half of its prerecession average.
The market itself, currently at about $500 million, is estimated to be worth more than $1 billion with further upside when global markets are more fully developed. The technology favors the new production model of rapid prototyping and displaces several other alternative cutting/milling technologies. At the high end, these tools are not inexpensive, but smaller systems are affordable and yet still versatile. Some continuous-process manufacturers (such as paper mills) use water jets exclusively for their cutting operations, as they create no waste, run year-round with little downtime, and can be easily reconfigured or repurposed, unlike most hard tooling. Textile and plastic extrusion manufacturers would be large potential markets.
Although the company is relatively small, it maintains an Advanced Systems business, which works with select accounts to develop custom, integrated solutions for specific production problems. The company recently worked with Airbus to develop custom tooling for its wing production, for example. These quasi-partnerships are valuable to both companies, and Flow’s maintenance of its Advanced Systems operation will pay benefits down the road.
